But I won't run, I have to stare it in the eye.
appearance;; In her original anthro form, Mei Ling is a light greyish-brown furred mountain cat of average height; with darker brown colored stripes on her arms and face, a marking on her forehead, and ears. She has a white underbelly and white spots around her eyes and mouth. Her eyes have a deep yellow sclera, with reddish-brown irises. Her clothing is a teal, somewhat personalized version of the uniforms of the academy she goes to; a tunic, pants, leg wraps, some form of armor over said tunic, a leather belt, and gloves. She also tends to carry a staff on her at some point in time, as she is exceptionally skilled at wielding one, so often has a carrying case for it strapped across her chest for when she is on the move and needs it.
In her new human form, Mei ling is a pretty young Chinese woman with dark hair and the same reddish-brown irises, though from a distance they appear darker than they really are. Her clothing style still favors the teals, blues, and greys often used by the students of the academy she went to, and are often in-between form-fitting and loose; not tight or loose enough to cause her a problem in a fight, but just right to be both comfortable and allow her to defend herself if necessary.
personality;; True to her status as one of, if not the best, student at the academy she studied at, Mei ling is a creature full of confidence and determination, and despite her kinder, more gentle side, she fights to the best of her ability; a truly fearsome warrior, when she wishes to be and is in the zone. As she is certainly not the most muscular fighter out there, particularly where she learned to fight, she has a strategic, clever mind as well. In battle this comes to play in finding an enemy's greatest weakness against them, or using speed and agility to her advantage. This cleverness extends outside of battle as well of course, and can be applied to many tasks; Mei Ling tries to be cautious in dangerous situations. She would never wish to be seen as cowardly, but she is not so foolish as to charge right into the face of danger without a plan of action first. Sometimes she doesn't have enough time to whip up an entire strategy, but she likes to give harrowing scenarios at least some amount of thought before taking them on.
Mei Ling is also a humble individual, not allowing her ego to be inflated by being the academy's star pupil. She is open with her emotions toward others, and very encouraging to those she thinks have something special inside of, or whom she respects. She believes nobody should hide their innate talents away if they have them, and will at times push others into the spotlight in order to show off their skills; at times without much thought about the repercussions, though she is quick to remorse if her actions bring humiliation to those she is trying to help. She means well of course, but at times can push some people before they are ready to shine- luckily the situation with Crane worked out for the both of them. Mei Ling is also not one to underestimate others; she faced enough of that at the academy before she proved herself, for her shorter stature and less muscular physique compared to the usual brand of students, so she doesn't think it is fair or wise to do that to others. But, when people do it to her, she uses it to her advantage, as a chance to blindside them and make them regret looking down upon her and everybody like her.
family;; Presumably Mei Ling has family somewhere in China, a mother and father at least, though with her training at the Lee Da academy, she rarely gets to see them.
history;;Mei Ling was born a happy, healthy baby to two proud parents, who gave her the best they could of everything and saw to it she was raised properly. When she was a young child, she displayed the usual grace and agility most chinese mountain cats possessed, but she took things a step farther; picking up items like sticks, brooms, anything resembling a staff which she play fought with and wielded quite wonderfully. Her skills were unrefined then of course, but they were still promising, and only improved over time as martial arts steadily became an area Mei Ling was fascinated in and enamored with. It only helped her passion for martial arts along when her parents told her stories of the lee da kung fu academy; one of China's most prestigious, private schools for teaching kung fu there was. She was told that if she trained hard enough and truly showed passion, that when she was old enough and the tryout sessions opened around said age, she could go for it. Invigorated by the thought, Mei ling trained hard over a period of a few years, until the big day finally arrived.
At first, Mei was met with the same skepticism Crane was later shown. She was small compared to many of the other students and lacked the massive amounts of muscle many of them had. Barely anybody thought she would be able to survive the gauntlet for a few seconds, much less make it halfway to the flag, and several of the other students and even the main teacher at the time tried to talk her out of it. The underestimation frustrated Mei ling to no end, but it just made her all the more determined to prove herself. She filtered out every hurtful thing she was told, and insisted she be given a chance, and when they offered it to her...Well, the doubters ate their words. She shocked all of them by managing to get through the gauntlet virtually unscathed and retrieving the flag; even more so when she was skimmed and had part of her arm sliced open at the last second of the course, but shrugged and laughed it off like it wasn't that big a deal at all; simply happy that she had managed to prove everybody wrong. She was admitted into the academy, and over time, with a lot of hard work, became the academy's star pupil.
She became acquainted with Crane as the academy's janitor sometime during this, and while she thought he was friendly enough, didn't often have time to socialize with him, and he kept away from the warriors an awful lot anyway. This all changed one night, when Mei ling spotted Crane attending to chores, but doing them so masterfully she could tell he had great potential inside of him. Amazed by what she had witnessed, Mei ling quickly left her dormitory room to compliment Crane on his skills, and even attempted to encourage him to try out for admission into the academy since the tryouts were coming up. He refused at first, and she didn't push him too much that night, but she wasn't about to let his skills go completely unnoticed. It wasn't fair in her mind, so during the hopeful new students try outs, she insisted to everybody that Crane had what it took, unintentionally humiliating him in front of everybody when they laughed such a notion off. Mei ling felt terrible, but when Crane accidentally wandered into the gauntlet and gave a look of determination she was familiar with, she encouraged him on with a smile and nod- knowing that he would be able to do exactly the same thing she did, perhaps even better. And he certainly didn't disappoint! Crane stunned everybody except her, who knew of his potential ,and she was quick to rush to his side and heartily congratulate him on a job well done.
From there, Crane was admitted as a student, and he and Mei Ling got to spar at times and she also was able to see him grow to the level of master. She stayed behind at the academy on request of one of her instructors, to help teach some of the students how to use a staff in combat effectively, while Crane went off to bigger and better things. Mei ling missed the bird that had become her friend, but she was incredibly proud when she heard that he had become one of the furious five; a celebrated master of kung fu known throughout all of China.
